For more than two years, Stacey H lived with severe bone-on-bone arthritis in his right hip. What started as persistent discomfort gradually affected every aspect of his life. Walking became increasingly difficult, his responsibilities at work in the warehouse became more challenging, and even getting a good night’s sleep was no longer easy. Although he knew he needed surgery, personal circumstances delayed the procedure. As time went on, the pain continued to limit his mobility and independence.
On May 12, 2026, Stacey underwent successful hip replacement surgery. His recovery in the hospital went smoothly. He followed the medical team’s recommendations closely, participated in rehabilitation immediately, and began moving the very next day. Knowing that he would need additional rehabilitation before returning home, his surgeon, Dr. Mehta, recommended Sans Souci Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
When Stacey arrived at Sans Souci on the evening of May 14, he immediately noticed something different. There was a pleasant energy throughout the building. The nursing staff welcomed him right away, helping him settle in comfortably. He especially remembers Nissi the CNA on the floor and Margaret, the overnight Supervisor, who made a positive first impression with their professionalism and attentiveness. He could hear residents and staff talking and laughing in the hallways, creating an atmosphere that felt warm and welcoming.
Initially, Stacey relied heavily on a wheelchair for mobility. He came in impaired for the lower right extremity. He was substantial max assistance of one person. He also required two people to climb stairs. While he was determined to recover, he understood that rebuilding his strength and confidence would take time. Fortunately, the therapy team was there every step of the way. Kacia, Christine, and Nkiya quickly became an important part of his recovery journey. Stacey describes them as down-to-earth, encouraging, and genuinely invested in his success. They constantly motivated him to challenge himself while reminding him not to rush the process.
Rather than allowing him to become dependent on the wheelchair, the team encouraged him to trust his abilities and begin using a walker. Their patience and guidance helped him gain confidence with each therapy session. Stacey was often one of the first patients ready for therapy each morning. Maintaining his routine and work ethic was important to him, and the therapists embraced that determination. They taught him not only what to do, but how to do it safely and effectively. Their encouragement and support made a lasting impact on him.
Stacey also speaks highly of the nursing staff on the second floor. Whenever he needed assistance, someone was always available to help. One staff member who stood out was Lidia, the Charge Nurse on the second floor. Stacey credits her positive attitude and strong work ethic with helping make his stay more enjoyable. “She’s always positive and in a good mood,” he recalls. Her energy and encouragement helped him feel comfortable and supported throughout his rehabilitation.
Outside of therapy, Stacey enjoyed spending quiet time reading and relaxing. Although he kept to himself at first, he eventually developed a good relationship with his roommate and enjoyed the companionship during his stay.
Over the course of his rehabilitation, Stacey made excellent progress. He arrived using a wheelchair and gradually progressed to a walker as his strength, mobility, and confidence improved. By the time discharge approached, his therapists asked what mobility device he hoped to use when he returned home. Without hesitation, Stacey said he wanted to leave with a cane. Through hard work and determination, he achieved that goal.
On June 29, 2026, Stacey was discharged home after a successful rehabilitation stay. When he left he was independent for all active daily living care and a set up to be independent for all functional mobility and stairs. He returned home feeling great and looking forward to continuing outpatient physical therapy. While he was happy to be back in familiar surroundings, he admits that he misses many of the friends he made during his time at Sans Souci.
Stacey’s journey is a reminder that perseverance and a positive attitude can overcome even the most difficult challenges. After years of pain and limitations, he committed himself to the recovery process and never lost sight of his goal of returning to an active and independent life. His determination, combined with the support of his friends at Sans Souci, helped him achieve remarkable progress.
